Q: How do I know if a contractor is really local?
A: Unfortunately, determining this can be a daunting task for many consumers in today’s market. It seems that many contractors come and go with the storm season, but there is hope. Be aware of the contractor that calls themselves a “National” company. Chances are they are only working in the state with the largest catastrophe. Check to see if they are listed with local organizations, such as the Colorado Roofing Association (http://www.coloradoroofing.org/2005/) and the Denver/Boulder BBB (http://denver.bbb.org/). Check their organization dates with the Colorado Secretary of State (http://www.sos.state.co.us/biz/BusinessEntityCriteriaExt.do?resetTransTyp=Y). Ask the contractor for local references from past years in business. Check with their material supplier to see how long they have been purchasing material locally.
Q: How do I know if a contractor is properly insured?
A: This could be one of the most important pieces of information you attain. In today’s litigation-crazed world, should an accident occur, you, the consumer, could be liable for damages - personal or property - if your contractor is improperly or under-insured. Be sure that the contractor presents you with a copy of their “Certificate of Liability” and “Certificate of Workers’ Compensation” insurance policies. Next, go a step further and call the insurance company to make sure the policy is in force. Be aware that some contractors don’t pay their monthly premiums and although they have a certificate, the policy is not in force.
Q: When is the best time of year to have my project completed?
A: The time of year is usually not as important as the weather is. Temperature can play a vital part in the installation process. Many materials allow for expansion and contraction, but temperature extremes can cause problems after the installation is complete. We recommend installation at no less than 40 degrees and no more than 100 degrees. Beyond the material issues, it can be quite uncomfortable for the installers and we don’t want them rushing through the project.
Q: Do I need to be home during the installation?
A: That one is entirely up to you. We only require that we have access to any part of the property that we are working on. Many people find the noise and mess of installation can be a bit disturbing. We often suggest that before or after the crew has arrived, you may prefer to go find an activity more to your liking. Return when the project is concluded and inspect the wonderful workmanship completed to your 100% satisfaction.
Q: What is the warranty on my project?
A: Typically there are two warranties: One on material and one on labor. The material warranties vary and will depend on the product you choose. This warranty covers against manufacturer defects. The labor warranty is the more important of the two. It covers any problems that arise from faulty installation. Make sure to check your contractor’s credentials, because the labor warranty is only as good as the contractor. Many consumers get stuck with what is termed “the tail-light warranty.” This is when your warranty expires when the contractor turns the corner, never to be seen again.
